Planting Rice for the Children

The orphanage had leased a rice field. That meant planting the rice, paying for the harvest, and receiving all the rice in return — so the children would have enough to eat.

Bill went into the paddy with everyone else. The Korean rubber boots didn't fit his feet, so he went in barefoot.

The woman beside him is laughing. Bill is knee-deep in mud, holding rice seedlings, doing the work. Mountains in the background, water all around, and somewhere in Seoul his missionary career continues — but today, the work is this.
